Olympian Culture
Religion/Beliefs:
The main religion of Olympius originated from Olympia, the capital province of the empire. They believe in a multitude of Gods, but they have four main deities:
- Brisol: God of summer
- Alitia : Goddess of Winter
- Helmon : God of Spring
- Rainach :Goddess of Autumn
These four take the role of ‘kings’ and ‘queens’ of the other Gods, and become ‘High King’ or ‘High Queen’ as and when their season comes. Other main Gods include:
- Sola: Goddess of the Sun (twin of Lua)
- Lua: Goddess of the Moon (twin of Sola)
- Naton: God of the sea and water
- Venatia: Goddess of the Sky
- Bellum: God of War
- Kaela: Goddess of Hunting and Animals
- Herts: God of Love
- Pyros: God of the Earth and of Fire
- Thantaur: God of the Dead and the Underworld
Temples are a common feature throughout the empire, and sacrifices are a regular occurrence.
A festival takes place at the start of each season to welcome in the new dominant God. These festivals take place over the space of a week and include events such as theatre productions, gladiatorial battles, sporting event and community based sacrifices, of which the gladiatorial fights and sporting events are most popular.
This is just a basic breakdown of religion in Olympius, Gods and traditions vary throughout the different provinces. Though this is the most common religion, a variety of small religious groups are found in Olympius.
Upbringing:
Education for boys and girls are not very different in terms of content. Lower education is compulsory for both boys and girls and begins at the age of 5 and ends at age 10; this is paid for by the state. For boys it is compulsory to go onto secondary education until the age of 16 (also paid for by the state), and can go onto higher education after 16 if they wish (this is privately funded). For girls education is only compulsory until the age of 10, from there it is their parents decision whether they continue an education or not; and if they decide to continue it must be privately funded.
Girls who do not go into secondary education either stay at home and learn household jobs or go into apprenticeships (e.g: weaving, cooking or decorating). After secondary education boys can go into higher education which can be one or two of a number of courses, which can be anything from maths to sports and fighting.
Careers :
There are many different careers, many of which are dependant on the province in which you live. For example: people in Eltus are often carpenters and fell trees while those in Venta tend to be miners. However, there are other obvious general jobs such as cooks, blacksmiths and farmers.
Gladiators and soldiers, however, are specialists. To train to be a soldier and boy must go into secondary education with a barracks. Gladiators, however, are owned by a gladiatorial school master. They are often children who have been sold to the school by their parents (as their parents are too poor keep them) or as a form of punishment for the parents (having their children taken from them to be trained as Gladiators). Gladiators are generally trained straight from minimum schooling age, though it is not uncommon for older people to start training.
Clothing:
Clothing varies depending on province and area:
- Those who live or come from the Forest of Eyrie (Province of Eltus and Ferna) tend to wear trousers, boots and jackets. Women wear skirts with a shirt, sometimes dresses.
- Men who come from the mountains (province of Venta) generally wear warm clothing with thick soled shoes when whereas the women wear shorter dresses.
- In Olympia, Talia and the Isle of Kelwyn tunics are the most common clothes seen, though influences from other provinces are found.
Hierarchy:
The empire is controlled by an Emperor. He has 14 advisors, two from every province in the empire, which he has appointed. Each province has a mini government, of which the two advisors are in charge of.
